Thought it might be interesting to start a topic devoted to the elusive perfect crossing shot. Post some photos of your best crossing shot and include information as to the date and airshow or location where you took the photograph. It could be a photo of one of the major jet teams, or a photo of aviators doing a close cross.

I will start off with a few of my best crossing shots.

The first one is of the Blue Angels, taken at the Tuscaloosa air show.

Next is one of the Thunderbirds, taken at the Warner Robins AFB air show, practice day May 1, 2009

Here is one of the Snowbirds, taken at the Snowbirds Over Anderson air show, May 7, 2008

Here is a four way cross by the British Red Arrows at the Quebec City 400th Anniv air show, June 14, 2008

And finally a shot of Skip Stewart and Les Shockley's Shockwave Jet Truck crossing, also at the Quebec City 400th Anniv. air show.

Cool idea. Here are mine. Some are film scans. I don't think I've ever gotten a successful Thunderbird cross.

Here's Miramar. The dang stormy sky as usual made me have to do a bunch of fixing to make this shot look less muddy.

You Red Arrows cross looks like it might have been from the Friday evening show at Quebec City last June. I got one just like it, with that same lighting effect at that show.

Here a few of mine. An old snowbirds Pt Mugu shot from approx 1996, and some Blue Angels shots from Miramar - the overcast shot was from 2005, the other two from El Centro this year.

My 3 best..all within the first month of owning the camera..in fact the first 2 were the day after I bought it. Stay tuned for the best from this season, now I know how to use the beast... wink.gif

The first 2 are here in Kingston last spring, the last is in Carp.

A slightly different type of crossing. Sadly we won't get to see this team do that again....

Great topic idea! Love all those shots - great timing guys! I'll have to look through the archives...

Joe,

Nice angle on the Thunderbird cross. Sometimes it pays to be somewhere other than flight line center.

I've got the Beasley timing (world's worst(sorry Jim just remember you PWAS pictures from McGuire laugh.gif )) when it comes to this stuff. Someone once told me to try holding the button down for these taking 3-4 pictures in a row. Well David F. Brown once told me if you see it in the view finder you missed the shot. How true.......they're getting close, push the button down..........click.......I see them cross......click.........1 plane and a smoke trail laugh.gif

These shots are AMAZING. Are you using a medium format camera?

Thank you for the compliment. All of the shots were taken using a Nikon D300 camera and a couple of different high end Nikon lens.

Someone was asking the secret to getting good crossing shots. What I do is try to align myself with show center, the normal crossing point that most performers shot for. Then I stand squarely facing the anticipated crossing point. I will pivot at my waist and turn towards one of the two planes coming to the cross. I get that plane in my viewfinder and follow him into the cross point while keeping him centered in the viewfinder. When I feel like I am about to be back square again and facing the cross point, I start to fire off the shutter. Since the D300 can take up to 8 photos per second, it only takes a short burst to capture the planes approaching the cross, crossing, and leaving the cross.

I'm kind of new to the forums, but here's my favorite crossing shot:

This was taken at the Binghamton Airshow on July 4, 2009. It was taken with a Canon Powershot A360 bit since then I've significantly upgraded my camera to a Canon Rebel XSI that will be put through its paces at the NAS Oceana Airshow in October.
Rhino93
So far this is my best/only crossing shot. wink.gif

This would have been so sweet if the focus had worked..two Iron Eagles behind Rob Holland's plane.

Actually, I think this is a pretty good shot. You get a good sensation of scale, depth and speed.
