Hello.
I am looking for photo's of our Tutor jet while she was flying with the Snowbirds. Her last position was as number 10 but she flew in the following positions 3,4,9,10,2,and 6.

Tutor 1114177 was recovered from Mountainview to begn a new life as a pedestal mounted aircraft. Upon arrival by ground transport in Nanton, it was decided to preserve the aircraft in the museum rather than mount her on a pedestal due to her overall excellent condition. The aircraft was stripped and repainted in Snowbird markings by Maurice Galli and over the years she has been brought back to life with working canopy and landng/taxi lights. Ejection seats have been acquired and installed and a set of smoke tanks have also been acquired.

The aircraft served with the Snowbirds for ten seasons flying as #3 (1977, 1978), #4 (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986), #6 (1985), #9 (1979), and #10 (1980). Towards the end of her career, she was once again on strength with Number 2 Flying Training School. The aircraft's last flight was to CFB Trenton on 27 July, 1999.

I don't have any photos of her as a Snowbird, but here is 114177 in the Boneyard at Mountainview in 2002. Judging by the photo, the museum has done a great job with her restoration.

Cool! What were they using for power to light up the Tutor? Do the anti-collision beacons work as well?

The Engineers wired up 2 12 volt Batteries in series and ran new wiring to replace the cables that were cut. We are still missing the anti collision light from the belly but the one on the top of the fuselage works.

Very cool! Next time I am visiting Calgary, I'm going to have to make the drive down to Nanton as I have not been there before and I'd really love to visit the museum.

Hereis another picture capturing the flash of the upper anti collision light.
I am sure you will enjoy your visit. It is best to call ahead first before going down as they will be changing over to winter operating times of the haven't done so already.

Ah! It's good to be King!
Here's a few more Tutors from Mountainview. Those in the hanger will eventually become Snowbirds, while those stored outside are used for parts only.

Awesome pictures there Craig! Thanks for the link to the others as well! There were a few Tbirds that have flown out of Mountainview. The Aete and all black one are two of the ones that left. Sadly the tutors outside will be reduced to cans.... sad.gif

Fanatstic shots! That final photo of 114160 gives me a great idea for a model. Craig, do you have a count on how many Tutors are in the hanger for the Snowbirds?

Hello Colin.
When I was in Mountainview in 2005, there were 16 being held in reserve inside the hangar but without engines fitted.

Looking through some photos taken last weekend by a friend of mine, I would say that there are 13-15 Tutors still stored in the hanger, and another 15 in outside storage.

Hey Craig,

Thanks for the info. Do you have any other shots of Tutor 114160 from the rear? I suspect that the tail end Snowbird markings are from another jet. I'd really like to do this as a model. Appreciate any help you can give me.

I don't have too much Colin. These photos were taken in 2002. By the time of my next visit in 2005, the jet was gone. I see the Snowbirds several times a year, and I don't recall having seen 114160 since it's time at Mountainview. By the way, the tail of Tutor 114160 came from 114052.

If you need a larger scan, send me a PM with your email address.

Oh this one is too easy..! 114160 was a batch of 9 tutors that were bought by Harold Carlaw's son Dave. Tutor 114160 was still on the flightline a couple of Tutors down from our own 177. I took pictures of her there as the signed tail section was of interest.
CF_Hornet_Fan
Craig...nope....what you have provided are perfect! As long as I had the serial number that was on the Snowbird section, that's all I needed. Thanks again!
Tailhook
Ok Colin...no problem.

Hey Peter, we must have been at Mountainview on the same day in 2005. In your photo of 114160/114052, the tail (of 052) is being loaded onto a trailer. Look at my photo below, as it is being hauled away! Same truck, same trailer, same tail!

Oh man, that last photo is perfect. Now I know what the majority of the jet looks like. Man, this is gonna be a sweet project!

Actually...I do have another question....not sure if anyone can answer it though. Any idea what they used to cover the canopies on the jets? Looks like some sort of silver insulation attached with black duct tape?

Colin the paper was silver on one side and plain or light brown inside. It was held in place with 3M wide black tape. I still have some tape left here that I found inside 177.
Are you going to do a diorama of a stored tutor??

Yes I am....going to build 114160 as it looks in the photos that have been posted. It looks like they put the same 3M tape over a lot of the joints and openings. Also looks like they used the same paper to cover the louvers above and below the strake on the nose.

Well that sounds like an interesting project. allupper vent openings etc were taped off. The ailerons, elevators, rudder and all lights were also taped off/ I have loads of pics from mountainview showing the various taped up areas.

Wow, that would be cool. I was wondering if they had taped up any joint lines, openings, etc on the underside of the jet. Guessing no because the chances of moisture getting to those spots would be slim.

Ok I am seriously Pi$$ed off now. Why can they not sell parts of or cockpit sections of the tutors?? There would be a market for it I am sure.??

Looks to me like there is a hive of activity right now with at least 2 different airframes being worked on for return to flight with the snowbirds.
CF_Hornet_Fan
I'm surprised that more Canadian aviation museums aren't getting their hands on a Tutor and/or a T-33. As for not selling cockpit sections and such, who knows why they wont. Maybe they get more cash for the scrap metal than selling it....plus, just the work to cut up one of the jets to just get the cockpit section. Who knows. I know I'd love to get a cockpit section myself....or why not go for the whole aircraft?!

Well they were offered to capa member museums and some of the museums acquired a Tutor. One private fellow acquired 9 of them which caused some ill will amongst toher smaller groups who lost out on a Tutor. There was supposed to be a third offering of airframes but it looks like that is not going to happen.

Great pictures by the way! Apologies for the rant above, as you can tell the Tutor is one of my favourite aircraft.
CF_Hornet_Fan
Meh, no worries about the rant. If I could have a Tutor cockpit in my backyard, I'd be smiling. I'd much rather have a flying example though. Trust me, if I were an experienced pilot, had lots of cash and wanted to do the air show circuit, I'd get me a tutor....or a T-33....or both.....alternate on weekends...LOL.

Official word from DnD is that no tutor aircraft or cockpits will be made available for interested people..!
