I attempted to post earlier but had a glitch on the internet access here in Salinas. Ugh...

Saturday's show went off without a hitch, as you can see from Keith's pictures. Sunday's show, however, was plagued with a "marine layer" that forced a number of the performers to do low or flat shows. That was certainly unfortunate because the Thunderbirds had to cancel completely because of those low clouds. They hung in at about 1000'; the Thunderbirds require 2000' cloud clearance from the ground to the base of the clouds.

Still, the Super Hornet and Strike Eagle did get to do high shows before the clouds came in. The Rhino had the most AMAZING vapor cloud around it during the high speed pass. It was visible as a circle around it from more than a mile out and continued throughout the pass. It was AWESOME. We were able to coax "Fid" into doing another high-speed pass at the end of the demo but it wasn't quite as good. I hope someone got a shot of it.

It was a great weekend in Salinas for the 28th annual California Air Show. Congratulations to all who put it together, including Harry Wardwell, Cindy Farrell, Gale Rawitzer, Kathy Eby, and ALL the volunteers who worked their tails off to make it a great event. Thanks, too, to KSBY's chief meteorologist, Jim Vanderzwaan for his great work as co-announcer. It was a treat!

Rob, Keith, it was great seeing you out there.

Rob, your rendition of 'Proud to be an American' totally rocked. We all sat there listening in disbelief as you sung the entire song!

Overall the show was a huge success and I think everyone had a great time. Fridays and Saturday's weather was spectacular as was much of Sunday. Unfortunately, the Marine Layer hovered a little too close to the airport and instead of retreating as usual, it returned quicker than expected. Personally, I think the Canadians approved of the marine layer judging by the number of high-speed vapor-rich passes!

So glad you were able to come back out. You're a welcome member of the Salinas Airshow family!

Just returned safely home from Salinas! What a great airshow - congrats to Gail, Kathy, Harry and the rest of your hard working team on another fine edition. Thanks for your fantastic hospitality! Rob, good to meet you in person after having chatted over email and telephone during the off season - both you and Jim did a stellar job with the announcing.

The flying program was stellar as well, but a couple of highlights for me...
  • CF-18 Hornet Demo - Capt. Billy Mitchell did Canada proud with his final airshow demo of the season. Depsite mechanical problems on Saturday and low cloud on Sunday, he wrung out the Hornet to everyone's awe. I particularly enjoyed the double high performance 360 degree turn on Sunday....really, it should be a part of the official demo...
  • P-38 Lighting Heritage Flight - Very cool airplane...
  • The Collaborators - wow, what an awesome team! Spectacular formation areobatics with a melee routine unparralled by anyone on the circuit. A lot of fun to watch - REALLY difficult to video properly since there is so much going on...
  • "Rhino" Demo High Speed Pass - awesome vapes. Full cone - impressive. Very impressive.
  • Socializing - always good to get together with friends from the airshow world. My buddy and I met up with Roy Hafeli (announcer), Katie Witoszkin (Abbotsford Airshow Office Manager), Darlene Hamre (Ft. St. John Airshow), and of course the people who run the Salinas show. It was also great getting together with Kent Pietsch and seeing the Skyhawks again as well- nice job, my friends!
Julie Clarke, Sean D. Tucker, Bill Stein, Jacquie B., along with the F-15E Demo Team and all the rest were great to see as well. Tyson, saw you in a flash at the briefings but we never got a chance to touch base - sorry, man. Maybe next time.

BTW - I flew Virgin America for dirt cheap from Seattle to San Francisco & back - and, being the first time flying with this new upstart airline, I have to say that the experience was, well, everything I imagined it would be............

Kudos to the entire California International Airshow - Salinas team!

My daughters and I attended the show on Sunday. As stated earlier, the Thunderbirds did not perform. Our good ole' Bay Area fog came rollin' in.

I am still going through my photos. I have a few of the Strike Eagle to post, so far. As stated earlier, vapor was awesome. cool.gif

Rob, nice to see you again in passing. The Girls did not know you could sing and were in awe when you sang the Canadian and National Anthems.

Tyson, so sorry I missed you. Maybe, next time.

We enjoyed the show despite the Thunderbirds not performing. The Kidzone was extremely popular (including Playstation 3) with the Munchkins. laugh.gif

More pics to come...

Nice hat! LOL

Toni, Erik, sorry I missed you guys. My tasks were a bit overwhelming this year as I was asked to photograph every form of seating entrance, sponsor booth, spectators and the occasional airplane. No complaints however as it only allowed me to stretch that creative process a bit.

Great pics. Glad to see everyone had a good time! Hope to post some pics soon. Thanks for the shots Keith. You rock!

For those still watching the CIAS thread, a special little video...

I loaded Sunday's video from CIAS. As promised, I edited together the vapor shots of the F/A-18 and added a 50% slo-mo of the coolest one.

http://www.kbvp.com/extreme-videos/f-18f-s...shockwave-vapor

for those not at the CIAS:
The F/A-18F Super Hornet flew high speed passes that generated massive vapor clouds. Sunday at the California International Airshow(CIAS) the air's moisture content was near maximum as the marine layer hovered just north of the show. As the day progressed, the airshow shifted from blue sky to low clouds. Most performers performed low shows as the weather deteriorated. The Super Hornet did the low show and really wowed the crowd with constant vapor clouds surrounding the aircraft.
