Absolutely awesome show....I gave it a B though becuase of what happened during the warbirds. They sent the fighters to fly top cover which allowed no pictures cause of the horrible high sky haze, they did the same with the more advanced trainers. I had a great time with friends and seeing old ones. Great seeing all of you guys. Pics very soon, especially of the HUN!
Flyin Illini
First of the HUN!

Nate Burrows
that is a beautiful hun. Also i saw a couple of you in the crowd during the feed.

One more...

Just finish downloading today's photo. Really muggy and Hazy day, but sky gets better and better as the show progress -- especially when the rapter returned to Mt. Comfort.

Last one for the night, see you all tomorrow!

Well, it's Saturday night and I'm back in my hotel room after dinner with my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and Max Moga.

Very good food at the Marriott - it made for a very convenient and pleasant evening.

The show today was WAY too much fun. Very hot today and very little breeze early on but spirits were good and the skies wonderful for high shows.

Mark Magin of Onboard Images had great, live, in-cockpit video of some of the acts, including the Golden Knights. Great stuff.

The WTHR crew did another great job. Their crews routinely work sporting events; that's why they get good shots with very long lenses. Audio was something they really wanted to work on this year and I'm glad that the audio was improved over last year's streamcast. BTW, Roger Bishop, WTHR's chief engineer, told me that there were about 8000 streams watched last year. By 2:30 PM today there were 8600!

All the performers did a great job and we had quite a nice gaggle of warbirds, from L-birds to a B-24 and a B-17. Rich's Incredible Pyro did the explosives and had a great wall of fire.

Ats far as tomorrow is concerned, he weather guessers and calling for isolated thunderstorms. That's what had been forecast for today. Hmmm.

My hope is that the cold front will pass through tonight, dump some - SOME - rain on the field, keep the dust down, clear the air, and give us fair weather tomorrow. It could happen! If I was a member of the AMS, American Meteorological Society, I could get a job on a TV station doing weather forecasting, get it wrong more than half the time, and still have a job! I don't know any other job where a less than 50% accuracy rate won't get you fired!

I'm going to get to bed. Big day tomorrow.

Rob

Nice pics guys....Where did the Raptor stage/takeoff from? I saw some of the show on the streaming feed and noticed the Raptor coming in. The narrator mentioned the Raptor can take off from as little as 1000ft. No runways that long @ Mt. Comfort?
Flyin Illini
It staged from Indy International...its ACC's guidelines for theirs demos that have to have a certain length of runway, albeit it may be able to land and take off from there. Its not within guidelines.

Wow! Two F-22 demo's in one day!,a spitfire, pair F-16's, warbirds and a F-18C demo 'not super Hornet as the announcer said over and over" with a touch and go! great show! Only thing that bothered men is the corsair never showed up to do the Legacy flight.
Flyin Illini
Yes we talked to the Warbird boss about it, it was down with engine problems and cancelled earlier this week.
ryman3500
Here are my favorite shots I got today. Wish I could be there again tomorrow. editing a little rough because it's late, and I'm using a trial version of lightroom that has no clone tool.

I apologize for the mistake. I did correct myself but, of course, it was too late. With both the "Legacy" Hornet and Rhino teams from the same squadron, I just screwed up.

Gosh, one little mistake after all the shows you've done, Rob. wink.gif

Geeze, cut him a little slack.

With the # of shows Rob does a year, I think he knows the difference. rolleyes.gif

I think what Rob was trying to say was that it was a SUPER Hornet demo......as in, watch this - it is going to be SUPER!
Right Rob?? And I have to agree, they did a SUPER job yesterday! rolleyes.gif

I did the same thing this year that I did the last two years; drove up to volunteer in the morning and then watch the show. I don't know that you could really call it working, though...I filled a few tubs up with ice, then sat at the taxiway to keep people from coming into the chalets. For that, I got free food, a seat on the show line, and I didn't have to pay a thing!

The problems for me started at the end of the first Raptor demo. While following it into the sunshine with my camera, my right eye started tearing up, and sunscreen got in my eye. For the rest of the day, I couldn't open that eye for more than a few seconds without having to close it in pain. The show was great, but I missed a lot because of that.

Anyway, I thought the show was excellent. Oh, and maybe I'm alone in this, but I'd love Michael Wiskus to do another act: the Lucas Oil golf cart! Racing down the taxiway, standing up, throwing t-shirts...now that's impressive!

My bad I was just surprised. I really don't know anything about the announcer Rob, so I was just pointing it out not really trying to cause a uproar. I guess I was a little harsh, I sometimes get set off when planes are not called the right name, but calling a Hornet a Super Hornet I guess isn't a huge deal. I suppose if he called it a f-16 that would be a bigger deal, but I don't see that happening.
Anyone know if the Legacy flight happened today?
Andy
Rob,

Great show your announcing is amazing....I'm looking forward to hear you narrate the Air power demo at Oceana...and of course the HF narration you do is amazing also. You truly are a great asset to the airshow community. Looking forward to hearing and hopefully meeting you at Oceana!

Many thanks for a job well done to Rob and everyone else who made this show possible. It was enjoyable to follow the webcast, although not as enjoyable as being there would have been. Thank you again.....

I concur. Great show. Glad to have the web feed as I couldn't make it this year.

Like Nate, I saw many ASB members in the crowd along the flightline.

Thanks to Rob, WHTR, the show performers and all the volunteers for another great show for Riley's Hospital.

Another Great Indianapolis Airshow Webcast. Great Job to all of the performers, Rob and the rest of the crew who made the webcast possible. Hope to see the webcast back in 2009
KEVAN BURKE
Great job on the web feed, I would like to see more of them, but it still isn't as good as being there. Hope to catch up with some ASB members at Oceana.

I agree, the web cast was great. It really helps those of us that can not make it to the shows still get our fix. I hope more shows will do the web casting in the future. The show was good. Rod and all the performers rocked. tongue.gif

To Nate and all who watched the show on the web -

THANKS! Thanks goes first to Roger Bishop who is, in my opinion, a big thinker when it comes to air shows. He travels to a number of other shows during the season to see how other folks run them so he's not "in-grown." Roger is, in his "real life," the chief engineer of WTHR-TV and will be the air show director next year. The TV work that he and the WTHR crew have done over the past 5 or so years has been improving each year and I would venture a guess that the "streamcast" WILL happen again in 2009. Roger is a good friend and has great vision for the air show business.

It's a total joy for me to be associated with this show. When I started, working next to retired announcer and Sword of Excellence recipient Bill Bordeleau (ICAS member #4), it was a country show with a good warbird turnout. Now it's a "big show," attracting the jet teams.

Of course this year the "jet team" was the F-22. From the preliminary reports that I've heard, the attendance was very close to or slightly ahead of last year's numbers with the Blues. That says to me that the Raptor is an important draw for the air show business. There are shows that have chosen to cancel because they didn't get a jet team. Indy didn't do that and I'm guessing that their confidence in the drawing power of the Raptor will be born out in attendance and monies donated to the Central Indiana children's charities.

Thanks, too, for the very kind words about my work. I totally love my job, even on a hot day in a hot flight suit. I am honored to serve the shows that hire me and I'm honored to support the men and women of the military who work the shows and who serve our country. There are few things I'd rather do than announce shows - I actually can't think of any right now - I simply love what's going on in the air. However, as I've told so many people, the airplanes got me into this business; it's the friends who have kept me in it.

Blessings to all who attended, who watched, who posted, and who LOVE AIR SHOWS!!

Another awesome day, great seeing friends again and had a blast. Great job announcing this weekend rob. Now im off a month from airshows:(. Also, i Dont know if the warbird guys were on here and saw what i said, but a total 100% perfection today, my friends and I were in awe at what you guys were doing. I want to change my vote to a A because of that. Great job today.
Flyin Illini
First from today...

Flyin Illini
Saw you were looking on here paul, you seemed to be having some fun following the not so fast prop jobs lol. Especially on final behind the T-28 when you asked how slow is the t-28 and boss replied not very. Here is a pic of you being very focused...

Flyin Illini
I do wish the yak flew a little closer, i wanted a good picture of it but its such a small airplane and 300mm is only so far:(....best one i got in flight...

flyingmom
Rob- as usual your announcing was fantastic! It was great to see so many ASBers this weekend! We had a great show all 3 days and had a great time hanging out w/ all of you!
Flyin Illini
Now this is what you call a LOW approach....Thse guys stole the show by far. Best ANG fly-bys ive ever seen..Where else have the ANG done a sneak pass before? You guys thought we wouldnt catch it didnt ya;)...Rob if you know these guys, tell them awesome job!

Aaron,

Great photography as usual! Yah it's always challenging flying dissimilar aircraft in the same airshow flyby groups but it worked out fine--just had to fly wider, higher racetracks then the prop fighters. I could have slowed down enough to stay spaced behind the T-28 but I hate to be low, slow, "S" turning and just hanging there so far out so if they hadn't told me to "fly through" I would have gone around. Great show and I look forward to seeing more photography. Anyone know if the webcast/video is posted anywhere for viewing?
Flyin Illini
Thanks for the compliment paul, glad you had fun too. Here is a shot of one of your photo passes today, not the best shot by no means, this was by far the hardest shooting show ive ever shot. Sun in your face all day, its a photographers nightmare.

Flyin Illini
But at times you could get kind of lucky and get a good shot...
