Here's the coverage from NJN Channel 12: 'Glacier Girl' to complete mission after decades on ice (06/22/07) TETERBORO ? More than 60 years after having to abort his World War II mission, a World War II pilot came face-to-face with a piece of his past. The ?Glacier Girl,? a P-38 plane from World War II, was pulled out of a glacier in 1992. The plane was part of a mission that had to be scrapped mid-flight. The so called ?Lost Squadron? of planes had to make an emergency crash landing on a Greenland ice cap due to low fuel and bad weather. The last living pilot involved in that mission is Brad McManus. The 89-year-old relived memories of that mission when he saw the ?Glacier Girl? at Teterboro Airport Friday. The aircraft has been fully restored and is taking to the skies once again. Seeing the plane brought back memories of the ice cap landing for McManus. ?You believed you could do it,? McManus said of the July 1942 incident. ?It was as smooth as concrete and of course, the minute the plane hit, the nose gear came down into the ice and sheared and the plane went over.? Now, decades later, McManus? aborted mission will be completed. Pilot Steve Hinton will take off Friday and retrace the route over the polar ice cap. McManus will be in the plane for the first 100 miles. ? Video : http://news12.cv.net/video/FNGLACIT.wmv

Brno, Czech republic, 26. 6. 07 Dear Bolero II Staff Members, Thanks to marvellous, but very hard journey, which I share with you live. I wish you perfect weather not only in todays leg!! I have one question: Fly now in Bolero II Glacier Girl with the same engines as in day first flight after rebuilt 26/ 10 2002 or are theirs engines new? I also write short article about Bolero II and Glacier Girl for Czech magazine Letectv? a kosmonautika (Aviation and Cosmonautics) number 6/ 2007 and I prepare great article about this marvellous journey also for this magazine, because I?m journalist writing about all warbirds and historical airplanes for Czech aviation magazines.

The release we sent out - picked up by AP.
WWII P-38 GLACIER GIRL?S TRANSATLANTIC MISSION POSTPONED
? Pilots Ground Historic Warplane in Eastern Canada; Her P-51 Companion Continues to Duxford, England ?
Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL, Canada (June 29, 2007)?Due to unforeseen mechanical issues involving the legendary WWII P-38 Lightning Glacier Girl during her transatlantic mission to Duxford, England, pilots Steven Hinton and Ed Shipley have decided to postpone the plane?s journey during its final North American leg.
Glacier Girl, flown by Hinton, alongside the vintage WWII P-51 Miss Velma flown by Shipley, departed from Jet Aviation at Teterboro Airport on June 22 to a media frenzy. The planes flew to Presque Isle, Maine and then to Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador. On Thursday, June 28, 30 miles outside of Goose Bay, Glacier Girl pilot Hinton began experiencing engine problems, and both planes returned to base. Upon examination, it was determined that Glacier Girl?s right engine was not functioning properly. The iconic warplane is grounded until the necessary repairs are administered.
?We knew from the onset there were risks involved with this mission,? said Hinton. ?Glacier Girl has never been over Atlantic waters since she went down in Greenland in ?42, so it is a disappointment, but this is just the beginning. We hope to have her in tip-top flying condition for EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh at the end of July, and then we?ll revisit this mission so that we can once and for all fly her across the pond.?
Shipley will continue forward in the P-51 to showcase the plane at Flying Legends in Duxford, England July 7 and 8. Founder of AirShowBuzz.com, a social networking web site for aviation enthusiasts, Shipley will provide daily commentary on the mission via the site while keeping the spirit of Glacier Girl?s journey alive.
?Even though we?ve had a setback with Glacier Girl, we?re going to get Miss Velma to Duxford in time for Flying Legends,? said Shipley. ?Nothing is ever etched in stone when it comes to flying these vintage planes, but we plan to honor the mission?s spirit of adventure by landing the P-51 safely in England and then work to fly Glacier Girl across in the near future. We thank everyone for their interest and support thus far, and we?ll continue to post daily updates on the site as we push forward.?

Damn shame! I suppose that a brand new Turbo-Allison (thats actually old enough to collect Social Security) is bound to have a few aches and pains. We would sure love to see "Glacier Girl" down here next year, any chance of that? http://www.fl-airshow.com/Dennis.

Deb Happy to find this site and forum, I'm the Photo editor for "World War II" Magazine and I'm in thr process of finding a couple images to go with a news item on Glacier Girl for our October issue. If anyone out there can email me directly I'd apprieciat it. It looks as if things are happening engine wise and I'd like us to have as current information as we can get considering the issue won't be out till early next month. Cheers Guy Add us to the list!!

Well by now Old GG is in the hanger some where, engines check, maybe even a C-check going on. But she is breathing well for sure. In another building somewhere, on paper is another C check taking place on where GG will go next year. Anyone ever think about the planning the owners go through to get there aircraft in the air, phone calls, many pots of coffee, looking out the window and thinking where the money will come from, do we have any money left over for next year, better call the wife, maybe shes knows. Who do we call first to line up next year, more coffee.. How many plans in the works for next year and for what aircraft, Now Deb is looking out the window too, better get some dinner so we can talk this over. Call Ed and Steven over for dinner, we need to find out who is doing what and when. Then there is the folks like me who sit and wait to hear what is in line for next year with GG. Honey can I have another cup of coffee, I waiting to hear what is going on. All options on the table, but which table. The Buzz sounds like a inline engine low on oil running at max RPMs. So I'm NOT going to ask what the plan is, no sir. I'll just wait like the rest of you folks. I think we could call it. (OPERATION GLACIER CROSS OVER). for the next trip. Can't help myseld Deb, what's going on. "Boats"..
