Just waking up in Reykjavik Iceland. Landed at 2:45am local... and yes the sun was still up! We flew almost 8 hours yesterday with about 7 hours of it over open ocean.... gives one a lot of time to think... and listen to the Merlin. Flew from Goose Bay to Narsarsuq Greenland... a quickturn.... then right off to Reykjavik. Stunning landscape... flew near where Glacier Girl landed on the icecap.

First of all I want everyone to know THIS MISSION ISN'T OVER! Miss Velma still has to get to Duxford… most important, she now carries the spirit of OPERATION BOLERO across the pond for Glacier Girl. (And the Bell!)

GG has had quite the life... stuck in ice for 50 years... then re-built to perfection.... now she is sitting in Goose Bay with a sick right engine. Hinton totally made the right call about taking her back to Goose. We were in formation just coasting out when the right engine started venting coolant out of the relief valve. The temp was normal but the coolant system was pressurized. There is NO WAY you mess with that. The plan is to ship a brand new engine to Goose and replace the sick one…. most likely this will happen after the DUX show. One thing is for certain… Glacier Girls adventure is NOT OVER… it has JUST BEGUN.

Here are some pics from yesterday We are planning to spend the night at Reykjavik and leave for DUX tomorrow morning It is a two hop from here… with one BIG over water leg. Make sure to watch the adventure unfold right here on ASB. Send out your good vibes… MISS VELMA is coming to DUXFORD.

Cheers
Shipley

Ed I have a question about your hat. Are you wearing it because you feel you are "lucky" to be able to be part of this, or is there something else about the hat that I'm not familiar with?

Don't know how he got it or who gave it to him, but that is his callsign.

Ed and the rest of the team:

Congratulations on the safe trip! Thank you for the great pics.

We look forward to the further ventures of Glacier Girl and Miss Velma. You are right the journey has just begun, just hit a "bump in the road (or air?)"

Many good words have been said, but "Abe" and I want to add ours - this has been a great adventure and we will continue to follow it. We cannot express our thanks enough to everyone who has had a part in making dreams come true for so many.

Drat, I've got to get back to work! Can't wait until lunch to read more posts.

Safe journey's!!!!!

How easy or difficult is it to obtain a new engine for the P-38? No one manufactures new ones, of course.

Thanks.

There are a few reputable Allison V-1710's that should fill the bill, they were used in the P-39, P-40, P-51-A, and of course the P-38..

I would suspect that an engine like this could be had in short order

So are you suspecting a breach in the head gasket, allowing combustion gasses to enter the coolant passages under pressure....or are there other ways this can happen?

Just extremely curious......

Ship,
As an automotive engineer, I will be interested in hearing what the root cause turns out to be. Yeah, combustion gasses into the cooling system is is certainly a reason to park her. Perhaps a cylinder head, hopefully not the block. I guess it will be awhile before the sick engine is flown back and torn down ? Keep us posted on that please. Thanks.

I guess WITH LUCK the stbd engine was shut down before any scoring occurred. In any case best of luck sourcing a 'ready' engine.

I am shortly going to check on IWM Duxford's opening times..

1000 BST (GMT + 1). 'till 1800 BST

Let's hope they have the sense and the ability to be a bit adaptable in the case of early/late popular arrivals such as this

MISSION UPDATE:

The team is watching weather and may launch Miss Velma today rather than waiting until Saturday. Meanwhile, Steve Hinton, Bob Cardin and Rod Lewis are all working on plans for Glacier Girl. We'll try to get some specific answers to your questions as soon as possible.

If you want to win one of our Operation Bolero II fleece shirts the team is wearing, simply guess Miss Velma's exact arrival time in Duxford by 1700Z. Private message "Bolerocontest" and make sure you include, date, hour and minutes of wheels on the ground at Duxford.

Launching Miss Velma from RKV? I'm at RKV and I'd be glad to know her departure as I'm in a good position to shoot the departure.

Thanks,
