Chuck Yeager: I Got Screwed by Virgin
Posted Dec 30th 2009 9:50AM by TMZ Staff

General Chuck Yeager -- the first pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound -- is pissed off at an airline company that compared his death-defying accomplishment to in-flight Internet service.

Yeager filed a lawsuit against Virgin America, claiming he never gave them permission to use his name in a press release which stated, "Not unlike Buzz Aldrin or Chuck Yeager, you have the opportunity to be a part of a monumental moment in air travel. The communication highway now has wings with in-flight WiFi at every seat on every Virgin America flight..."

In the suit, filed yesterday in San Francisco County Superior Court, Yeager claims even if he did allow his name to be used -- he would require "a substantial sum."

Gen. Yeager is suing for unspecified damages -- but the coolest part of the suit mentions an event in October in which the 86-year-old icon flew "an F-16 aircraft at the speed of Mach 1.6, breaking the sound barrier once again."

Pretty badass.

Chuck is a very interesting guy.

I remember a story back from Oshkosh many years back.

Chuck was up to fly a Mustang for the air show, and was running a bit late. They were on a corporate jet and were approaching near OSH right before the TFR went in effect for the aerobatic airspace, but they got there a bit too late after the TFR went on.

The corporate pilot was contacting the tower telling them that they must land at the airport as they were on a time schedule. The tower refused, and the pilot remarked with "well, how about you talk to General Yeager then."

ATC - "Oh, sorry about that sir. Cleared to land!"

Chuck hopped out of the jet, through on his flight suit, and moved on to the P-51.

I'd still like to meet him, but i'd think twice before shaking his hand. When i was growing up Chuck Yeager was one of my heros but slowly but surely he's tarnishing his reputation and achievements.

I have the utmost respect for Chuck Yeager and his aeronautical accomplishments, but really, this is kinda silly, looking for a little cash for a remark made by a ridiculous airline. I would think Yeager would have much bigger fish to fry. sounds like something his kids or his ex wife would do to root out a little financial reward.

Really? Sounds like someone is just trying to make a quick buck or something.

I very much respect Chuck Yeager, but this is just stupid.

I think it would be best to get all the facts, both public and personal, before slinging stones.
Not to defend Yeager since I don't know all the personal issues going on in his life, but ever since he remarried, his persona and direction has changed dramatically. Reading between between the lines, that leads me to believe it may not be completely Yeager's fault as to his recent actions.

Get off him. The thing is you don't use or mention a celebrity in your ads without compensation or permission. Forget the dollar amount, when they do that you gotta sue. I would, wouldn't you? And you have to make it expensive enough to deter repetition

The trick about that, though, is that it doesn't sound like he was portrayed as a celebrity endorsing a product, more like someone involved in a comparable (though that is highly debatable in this case) development in the advancement of flight. And one of the little legal tidbits I picked up reading Courtroom Cowboy about Jim Beasley is that when you sue over something like defamation or libel (not exactly what this case is about but not too far off I think) when the plaintiff is a public figure, which Yeager undoubtedly is, you have to provide more proof that the effort was malicious. Again, this is a different type of case but one still based on use or mention of a public image.

What makes me sort of chuckle is that people who were born the year we landed on the moon for the first time are 40 years old or better and that was well after Chuck. None of my children who are all over twenty, can name maybe more than one person who has landed on the moon. To them, ancient history.

My question is, how many people, outside of die hard aviation buffs, can even tell you who Chuck Yeager is anymore.

Sucks getting old! sad.gif
