The Friday evening show spectators got an eyeful as the skies cleared after a mid-afternoon thunderstorm shortened practice for the weekend's shows. At about 4:55 the Red Bull helo, piloted by Chuck Aaron threw the BO-105 around its rigid rotor system with rolls, loops, and duster turns. The last time I giggled this much at an air show act was the first time I saw Jimmy Franklin and the Jet Waco.
Let me back up before the rain, though. Prior to the Thunderbirds' practice, "Max" Moga took off in the F-22 along with the Thunderbirds and did several formation passes with the Thunderbirds - Max in the lead and 3 T-Birds on each wing. Speaking with Thunderbird #1, Kevin Robbins, afterwards, he told me that he was working really hard. He hasn't had to fly formation on anyone for quite a while! It was a spectacular sight. Former Air Show Fan of the Year, Denise Decker, took a number of pictures so I believe we'll be seeing those soon. Liza Eckhardt from FenceCheck was also there. No doubt we'll see some pictures there.
Perhaps the biggest news of the show, though, was the Raptor Demo. It was a "full-up" six pass demo with a power loop, some amazing turns and vertical climbs, and a tail slide (then turning right into another power loop). Many were not expecting this demo to be approved until much later in the season, perhaps even 2008, but we saw it tonight. The Raptor demo team has been eager to show off this jet for some time. Max and the guys and ladies from the 94th FS can be justifiably proud.
More to come tomorrow. The weather should improve and be even better on Sunday. See you all there. I'm having a ball.
Rob

repost from preview page.... Well, for anyone who would still be on here, Ill be wearing khaki shorts, sandals, a dark green VMX-22 shirt with the yellow VMX-22 patch like this: on the front right breast (from viewer) the back will have black drawing of another VMX-22 symbol, with 3 V-22s around the top of it, hard to see from even close up. will also be wearing a carolina hurricanes 2006 stanley cup champions hat, maybe. aviator glasses of course. 8)

Okay Rob, now you put the pressure on me. Very special formation only being done on Friday. The F-15 in the one shot is carrying a T-bird photographer.

Just got back from sat. show. The Thunderbirds narator wasen't there so a diffrent pilot took over. The Birds started with a high show, and then switched to the low show. The F-18 Demo was badley narated, with pyro going off unplaned. Manfred Radius wasent able to fly, due to winds and clouds. Airshow4444

Hey guys, Glad so many got pictures. Jack and I didn't even make it to the Grassy Knoll - about a 2 or 3 hour wait to get in - we hung out with a bunch of folks we knew - and new friends..... Clint, Dwayne, come to mind, and Clint's son and friend - ( Sorry guys, am really bad with names.) We saw JB going in with 2 of his buddies. But we were able to photograph the glorious planes and those that fly them. Thank you to Jim for trying to save the spots on the grassy knoll for us, and Liza, thanks for the calls. !!! Rob, I'm sure you did your fantastic job announcing - Ed, the Sabre is Fantastic! Jack has tons of video of it - He can't get enough of filming it!!!!!
Thanks to everyone, and it's onto the next show for Jack and I. Marylou

QUOTE(Dave Hederich @ Apr 28 2007, 08:08 AM) The full Raptor demo is just the most amazing thing I've even seen in the skies. This is going to rock airshow fans around the country and around the world for many years to come! I can't wait for someone to upload a high-rez video of the whole demo so that I can share it with all of my friends back in Michigan. Sorry I forgot to bring a firewire cable so I can't upload anything until Monday, but trust me...this demo is beyond words. The most amazing part of the demo was the fact that there was complete control the entire time. You could literally see the surfaces moving smoothly to the requested input. Simply amazing from an aerodynamic standpoint. Good seeing other ASB'ers out there today. I'll be at show right again tomorrow...just look for the guy leaning backwards awkwardly with the video camera on his shoulder!

I would have to agree with Rob on this one, the Friday night "preview" of the full up from the Raptor was quite spectacular... and all done under total control!! Amazing!!!
