Recently had the chance to photograph the 30th Anniversary FA-18 on its ceremonial flight three decades to the day the first F-18 flew.

Very nice,I would have loved to see it.These are almost the same colors as the test aircraft I seen at Pax.River in the 80s but it was called the YF-17 then.

Nice pictures - thanks for sharing!

I'm not a huge fan of the bug or the super bug but i must say that in this paint scheme I could learn to like this bird. Nice shots gwetzel!!!!! Was this photographed while it was flying over San Diego/Coronado?

No the test aircraft at Pax in the early 80's were F-18's. The YF-17 was what competed against the YF-16.

I do love the way that it looks a lot like the 80's test aircraft. I remember seeing those as a kid at Pax.

You are exactly right but I do believe the colors on the test aircraft were blue and white only were they not.I remember the compitetion aginst the f-16 and believe it or not i have an old-old Aircombat Magazine with the story in it.Think i need to dig it out huh, for i should have known from common sense why would the yf-17 be at a naval test station when it competed for an airforce contract.I HAVE MY MOMENTS.

Thanks for straightening me out,

Rick Hughes

My shots aren't as good as gwetzel's, but I thought you guys would like to see that VFA-106 was flying....what I think was this jet...or one painted in the same scheme...an air show demo practice this past weekend at Oceana. Apparently it was tearing up the skies over the airfield on Friday, but I was there Saturday when it was practicing the Legacy Flight. Here are two of my shots from Saturday (March 21):

Same here. If it is, it's going to awsome to see the CF-18 demo jet and the VFA-106 legacy demo jet both at the same show here in Windsor.
